"Some teens decided to borrow their dad’s car. They knew they weren’t supposed to, but they did it anyway. That was choice number one. Then they decided to go drinking. That was choice number two. Then they decided to go for drive. A very fast drive. That was choice num- ber three. They didn’t wear their seatbelts and you guessed it, choice number four. They ended up hitting a tree. A tree doesn’t give. A car hitting it at a high speed will barely scratch a tree two feet in diameter. A car, however, does give. A couple of the teens were thrown right though the front windshield. Others were trapped inside and the jaws of life were needed to cut them out. It was a real mess".
"We responded to an incident at a drinking establishment, where a 56-year-old man had tripped and fallen face first down four stairs.  He landed on his face with enough force that it hyperextended his neck (forced his head violently backward).  His neck was broken, his spinal cord severely damaged.  He was completely paralyzed from the neck down and was on a ventilator for the remaining four years of his life.  This happened because of a fall down four stairs.  After he realized his condition would never improve, he wanted to die.  How do I know this?  He told me so".
"We were called to a house trailer fire with the ambulance. When we arrived, the trailer was fully engulfed in flames. The firefighters quickly put the fire out. It was too late. Two adults had died in their beds. The carbon monoxide had killed them without even waking them from their sleep. They never knew what happened.
The children weren’t so lucky. All four of the children, ranging from ages two to nine, were found at the back door. They were burned beyond recognition. They tried to get out but couldn’t. The door had been latched closed and was too high for them to reach. They died a horrible death. I witnessed the autopsies, an experience I will never forget. The fear and pain those poor kids went through is unimaginable".

"In one of the classes I was teaching, two of the attendees shared their experience of having been involved in a double fatality. The incident involved an H2S release and two of their friends and co-workers had died. These brave men shared their experience of that day and what happened. They shared how a beautiful summer day turned into a nightmare they couldn’t wake up from. You could have heard a pin drop. I have never heard a more powerful safety message in my life. I’m sure everyone who was there for the discussion will never forget it. This discussion happened over sixteen years ago and I still get goose bumps when I think about it".

"I was speaking to a group of safety professionals at a conference and, since it was early December, talked about the number of people injured every year after falling from step ladders while putting up Christmas lights.  After my talk, two safety professionals came up and quietly told me how they both had become injured in the same way.  One of them admitted he was actually standing on the THIS IS NOT A STEP warning, lost his balance and fell knocking himself unconscious.  He would have frozen to death if the neighbor's kid hadn't gone home and asked his mother why Mr. Smith was sleeping on the sidewalk.  The second safety professional shattered his knee and was off work for four months".
"One morning, a woman was on her way to work when she rear-ended another vehicle at a red light. She was doing approximately 10 mph (13 kph) when they collided. Fortunately, the damage was minor.
Whenever we are called, we are obligated to check the people involved in case they’re injured. It was easy to tell what the woman was doing at the exact point of impact. When we looked at her, we couldn’t help noticing a large red line that ran from the corner of her mouth right up to her ear. You guessed it. As she was driving she was looking in the rear view mirror, applying lipstick. At impact, her hand, with the lipstick in it, streaked across her face".

"In my work as a paramedic, I have witnessed extreme cases of stress related problems, including approximately 700 heart attacks that often involved people who were close to my own age (43 at the time).  I have learned that such problems can be prevented, or at least reduced.  You can choose to manage your stress.  It is your decision.  And, remember, that if you let stress control your life, it could kill you".

Cat's Have Nine Lives, You Do Not!

"We attended a twenty-four year old who was trying to retrieve his girlfriend’s cat from a power pole. Using a
long metal bar he tried to “coax” the cat down.
Unfortunately he came into contact with the power line.
The electricity ran down the bar, through his body and exited out of his feet. The extensive burns he received to his feet will affect him for the rest of his life. In the ambulance he told me that he had done a very stupid thing and was smart enough to know better. Unfortunately he didn’t put his knowledge into practice".

What Are Other's Saying About Martin,
His Content Delivery And Speaking Style...

We would like to thank you very much for your participation in Chelan County PUD Safety Day.  This was the first time we have utilized a guest speaker; and based on the responses we have received, it won’t be the last. We feel fortunate to have gotten such a high quality safety speaker for our Safety Day.
The employees related to you because of your “been there and done it” experience. Your message was very clear to the employees, and we hope that it will continue to remind them of how important safety is to themselves, co-workers, and their families. Your presentation style is entertaining; you provide just enough humor on a very serious subject.
Again, Martin, thank you for the information you shared with us. We will be recommending you to other organizations that might benefit from the safety message that you deliver.

Dennis McMahon
Supervisor, Safety & Training
Public Utility District No. 1 of Chelan County, Wenatchee, WA
The purpose of this is to thank you personally for the outstanding presentation you provided to the Illinois Army National Guard at our 11th Annual State Safety and Occupational Health Conference, Springfield, Illinois.
At a time when the National Guard is being called to service in unprecedented numbers around the world, safety and health are key readiness issues for our soldiers. Your presentation was what we in the military call “steel on target”. You covered many aspects of safety and health that were not only timely, candid, and thought provoking, but also extremely well received by the attendees...our soldiers. Your discussion of the “ripple effect” of an accident or injury was particularly powerful.
Your knowledge of the subject matter and your ability to share information are true gifts, Martin. Keep up the great work! I hope that our paths cross again. You are a true professional.

Linda S. Hadley
Maj, AN, IL ARNG
State Safety and Occupational Health Manager

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for making our Ninth Annual Celebrate Safety Banquet truly an event to remember.
Safety is one of the biggest battles we fight everyday in the construction industry. As you pointed out in your keynote speech though, safety is something we need to think about in every aspect of our life. The “ripple effect” that an accident causes, no matter if it is at work or at home, is still the same.
The eight points that you presented and the stories told to illustrate their importance were both insightful and entertaining. The feedback from other District team members was all very positive. I believe we have all had to deal with that eighteen-year-old that didn’t understand why she should wear a hard hat. Your discussion on what the rest of his life will be like if he doesn’t was very eye opening.
Again, thank you so much for being a part of our conference. The message you have to present is one that the construction industry will truly benefit from.

Michael T. Abeln, PE
Chief, Construction Division
Department of the Army
Mobile District, Corps of Engineers
I wanted to convey a special thank you on behalf of Canadian Pacific Railway. Your presentation at our recent Senior Managers Safety Conference was extremely well received by the participants. You have found a way to link unforgettable stories to simple safety messages — in a way that makes people stop and think before they act. Although the participants were senior managers, the message was very effectively delivered and positively received.
As I indicated in our recent conversations, some managers have expressed interest in creating opportunities for you to speak directly to our front-line employees, who could also benefit greatly from your presentations.
Thank you also for the safety books and I look forward to seeing the cards when they are available.

Faye Ackermans
General Manager
Safety and Regulatory Affairs
Canadian Pacific Railway

I thank you for your terrific and powerful safety message you delivered to our employees and customers. You have a great style that rivets people's attention for an hour and a half by combining humor with the seriousness of the safety topic and hard lessons learned from your observations as an EMT. You kept our attention completely and I have no doubt you will have saved some of us from serious injury or illness due to your fine presentation."

Warren D. Smalley, CPCU, ARM
President and CEO
New Mexico Mutual Casualty Company
Mr. Lesperance provided the keynote address “I Won’t Be In To Work Today: Preventing Injuries at Work, Home and Play” at the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference, held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle. Approximately 2,300 people were in attendance.
The evaluation comments indicated that his presentation was well received by the attendees. They considered him a very good speaker and commented that he was both funny and motivational. His descriptive story telling of incidents that could have been prevented with a little common sense was appreciated. He truly was able to paint a picture with his words.

Greg Davis, President
Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Conference
I'd like to thank you for giving the keynote address at our health and safety conference in Saint John.  Feedback from the delegates, exhibitors and speakers have been very positive and your message "hit home" with many people.

France Hache
Manager, Communications
Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission of New Brunswick
I thank you for your experienced presentation at our recent Site Safety Meeting. You captured the attention of our employees and drove home the point of how important everyday safety is in our lives. Your method of combining the seriousness of safety with your humorous approach conveys the message very well."

I would like to take this opportunity to extend to you my appreciation for the exceptional presentation you gave to TransCanada Staff. Your “I Won’t Be In To Work Today!” message was very well received by our staff. We also heard some wonderful comments, some of which I’d like to share with you:
• Serious issues were presented by a humorous professional who knew his topic and how to get through to his audience.
• I was very moved by the speaker. Life is so precious and delicate; one simple error can cost you and your loved ones dearly.
His humor and down to earth mannerism keeps your interest and drives home a very serious message.
• Mr. Lesperance was not only entertaining, but the use of real-life stories to back the facts made his presentation very credible.
The TransCanada Health, Safety and Environment Team is very committed to increasing the awareness of their staff. Your presentation was a wonderful start to our renewed focus on the Health and Safety of our employees.

Alan R. Glasgow
Vice President

As a representative for Exelon Corporation, I would like to thank you for coming out to LaSalle County Nuclear Station and speaking in our fourth quarter safety meeting. You captivated our attendees and created quite a buzz at our station. Your presentation was inline with our current needs and concerns. This was an important time for us because of our recent negative trend with safety and an upcoming outage in a few weeks. I have heard nothing but positive feedback from our employees on your safety message. You did an excellent job personalizing the message and got the point across in a sincere but fun way of why being safe is so important. One point you especially lit home was that “Accidents are predictable and preventable events and they don’t have to happen”. All too often you hear employees state that getting injured on the job will eventually happen and it's just one of those accepted risks. But after your presentation workers stated they definitely felt differently about that misconception. This is one safety meeting all of us here at LaSalle Station will walk away from and continue to think about for a long time.
Again, Martin I want to thank you for coming out to our station and wish you continued
success in your endeavors.

Thomas Dean
Operations Supervisor
LaSalle County Nuclear Station

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your presentation "I Won't Be In To Work Today" at the 2000 Gillam Area Safety Conference.
Your presentation style had a very dramatic impact on the messages that you delivered. Many will recall the situations during your presentation and I am positive that these situations will make them think "twice" before proceeding in an unsafe manner.
Mission accomplished!

Recently, the Minnesota Wood Products Division of Potlach Corporation held a safety conference in which Martin Lesperance was one of the keynote speakers.
I was very pleased with Martin’s presentation. His message was very straightforward, easy to understand and practical. He really held the audience’s interest. I would definitely recommend Martin as a presenter in this arena.

Ronald S. Salisbury
Potlach Corporation

I want to thank you first for your willingness and participation in the AWCBC Congress and share with you the commentary that came back on the evaluation forms.
What can I say? The reviews that have been supplied to us were, without a doubt, full of high praise that you can be proud of and may quote at a success of your efforts at our Congress.
Words used to describe your presentation from our documents were “informative”, “energetic”, 'well presented." Some commentary was “great presentation - had my full attention all the time.” Another comment, “presentation should be included at all AWCBC in future”. 'Passionate" was used to describe your delivery. “An excellent person - comments were great, knowledgeable and great tips.”
So, Martin, I can only say "thank you", which hardly seem to be enough words. But I am sure from our conversations, you know that statement came from the heart and in gratitude for your participation in our program and the success which your presentation added to our congress.
All the best to you in the future. I am enjoying your e-mails and am forwarding them on to our Health & Safety Division as I finish reading them.

Elaine MacEachern-Pierce
Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island
On behalf of the Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board, and the participants at Inside Workers’ Compensation, thank you for bringing your humor, sound advice and common sense to our recent WCB Institute.  The Saskatchewan Workers’ Compensation Board developed WCB Institute to provide employers, union representatives, and health care givers with an opportunity to learn more about the WCB, our purpose, mandate, policies and practices. We also use WCB Institute to showcase success stories in injury prevention or return-to-work programming, and to provide opportunities to team from well-respected and knowledgeable keynote presenters.
Your keynote presentation was a wonderful reminder that the separation between our private and work lives can disappear when injury removes someone from the workplace. Your 'top ten safety tips’ were an important reminder that accidents and injuries are preventable, and that our most important safety tool is usually our own good sense! ( I am certain that everyone in the audience could see themselves in one of’ your stories. Though the one about the lawnmower and the hedge was pretty unique! )
Thank you, again, Martin for taking the lime to be with us in Saskatoon. Continued  success in spreading your important words on injury prevention.

Janice Siekawitch
Director, Planning, Research & Communication
Saskatchewan Workers Compensation Board
